PROLOGUE:
My name is Kezia Lucas and I am going to tell you the tale of how my friends and I became THE EPICS…
STORY: JULY 01 2011
It was a Friday like any other as I got dressed for school. In the room across the hall, my little brother, Kyle, was also getting ready. In three other houses the rest of our little group was getting ready too. We all usually meet at Kael’s house. He was the geek of the bunch. His house was huge compared to the rest of ours so we used it as our hangout.
I was walking up the street to his house now, it was only about two houses away from mine, and I could see the rest of the gang arriving right on time. Kyle was walking with me while Omari, the cool Parkourist, and Jamarri, the hilarious girl’s man, came from the other end of the street. We all greeted each other at the gate and then went inside to get Kael. He was waiting where he usually did…at his laptop desk working on a graphic design for one of his customers. I put my hands around his eyes.
“Which one of us is it today?” Omari asked.
“Dude, there is only one girl in our group. Unless your hands are really soft…it’s Kezia.” Kael answered without removing his gaze from the laptop screen.
“Come on, you’re gonna make us late.” I said.
“I’m almost finished.”
We didn’t all go to the same school. Omari, Kael, Jamarri and I went to the same school…Successville High. Omari and I were seventeen year old juniors, Jamari was a sixteen year old freshman and Kael was an eighteen year old senior. Kyle went to Successville Middle School. He was eleven. His school was only two blocks closer to our street than the rest of ours.
Omari was walking backwards in front of us laughing at whatever Jamarri was saying. Jamarri was always the funny one.
“Aren’t you afraid that you fall or trip over something?” Kael asked loud enough for Omari to hear, he was walking next to me.
“No way! I can back flip down this street. I know it like the back of my hand.” He boasted. Then he started doing backflips on the sidewalk. I looked ahead of him and saw that there was something glowing purple in his path.
“Omari look out!” I called after him. And when he landed his fifth backflip he slipped on the purple object and started tumbling. It looked like a stone, but just purple. It flew over Jamarri and Kyle and hit Kael on the head. When it fell into his hands it was orange then suddenly turned pink.
“Wow! This is a really cool stone.” I said in awe.
Kyle and Jamarri came over to us while Omari got off of the floor. I poked the stone with one finger and it slowly turned green. Jamarri gasped, but obviously not out of fear because he poked it next and it turned blue.
“That is so creepy; keep that stone away from me.” Kyle said backing away. He accidentally bumped into Tiffany. She was the little girl, about his age, who lived next door to Kael’s house. She was really annoying so we never really hung out with her, butshe hung out with us.
“Hey! Watch it!” she shouted at him, even though he was right in front of her.
“Kyle…catch!” Jamarri called, taking the stone and throwing it. Kyle automatically held out his hand and caught it. It turned red.
“Cool.” Tiffany said. “Can I see?”
“No.” Kyle said, but she took it any way. This time the stone changes into a normal stone. Omari then came over to us.
“No, I’m fine, thanks for asking.” He said sarcastically. “What are you guys looking at?”
“Tiffany broke our colourful stone.” Kyle answered.
“I don’t know what that means.”
I chuckled. “We’ll explain it at lunch but right now we have to get to school.”
Kael took the stone from Tiffany and put it in his backpack. I could tell that he couldn’t wait to examine it.
At school, after making sure that Kyle went to his, the rest of us were kind of excited. We didn’t know why but we were strangely giddy. We went to our individual classes. I wasn’t able to concentrate because I kept daydreaming. It was odd though. I was daydreaming about my friends in their classes. They weren’t doing anything weird, just what they would normally do in classes. Jamarri was answering his Math question wrong. Omari was drawing a motorcycle in his notebook instead of taking notes. And Kael was listening to a lecture. Even though I knew it was them, I wasn’t seeing their bodies. It was like I was in their minds, not reading them but seeing through them. Cool.
“Kezia?” My teacher asked.
“Uh…yes sir.” I answered.
"What is the electronic configuration of Lithium?” He asked me…I was in chemistry class. Then I was suddenly seeing through his eyes, like in my daydreams, into his text book.
“Two in the inner shell and one in the outer shell.” I recited what I saw in the book.
“That is correct.” He said almost in surprise.
Wow. That was cool.
When lunch time came I met up with everyone. They were all acting kind of nervous like I was. But no one said anything, we just walked in silence. We all headed to the cafeteria. But when we were halfway there Jamarri stopped.
“I’m going this way guys.” He said pointing toward the principal office. “I have to go see the principal. My Math is really bad and Mr. Rockster figured that out when I answered every question wrong in class.”
“Wait, what?” I asked in shock. Didn’t I daydream him answering his question wrong in Mr. Rockster’s class?”
“I said that my Math is really bad…” he started to repeat.
“No, I heard you I just…”
He eyed me suspiciously. “Then why did you ask?”
“Uh…I don’t know. Forget it.”
Maybe it was just a coincidence. He gave me one last look and then headed to the principal’s office. I starred after him, concentrating, trying to make sense of my thoughts. A few second, after he was out of sight, I pushed everything into the coincidence file. I turned back to Kael and Omari, who were talking amongst themselves. Omari was showing Kael his notebook.
“What’s that?” I asked.
“I wasn’t paying as much attention in class today so much as drawing a motorcycle.” Omari answered. “Are you okay?” he asked a little panicked when he saw me stop breathing.
I think that had forgotten how to breathe. All the blood in my body was rushing to the part of my brain that was working towards figuring out how this was possible.
“Uh…Kael?” I called.
“Yes.”
“Did you, by chance, have to listen to a lecture in class today?”
“Yeah…why?”
“Oh, no reason.”
He shrugged and went back to his conversation about Omari’s drawing.
“Dude, this motorcycle isn’t even finished.” He laughed.
“I know man…Halfway through, my pencil point kept snapping. Then the pencil broke in half.” Omari said angrily.
“Hmmm…” Kael rubbed his chin.
“Yeah, hmmm, was all I said too.”
We started walking towards the cafeteria again. I had already pushed my unexplained daydreams away to the back of my mind. I would think about it later.
After school we all went back to Kael’s house. Kyle was with us once again. We hung out in Kael’s room. It was later so I was thinking about the daydreams again. I had to tell the gang something. They wouldn’t believe me but I had to try.
“Um…guys…” I started to say but I didn’t get the chance to finish.
Jamarri tripped on an extention cord, like the clots he was, and fell towards the bed. But instead of landing on it, he landed under it.
“Ouch!” he groaned when he hit the floor. I squeaked. Did he just fall through the bed?
The other boys’ eyes popped as Jamarri shimmied out from under the bed his eyes were glowing green even though they were normally bark brown like the rest of ours.
“What?” he asked in confusion when he caught us starring at him.
“I think you should look in the mirror.” Omari suggested.
“Yeah I haven’t seen myself in about five minutes.” Jamarri joked. But when he looked in the mirror he did a double take. “Is that me?”
“Yeah. It is.” I answered.
“Awesome.”
“Or horrible.” Kael added.
“How is it horrible?”
“Dude, you just fell through the bed.” Kael’s voice was higher now.
“I did? No way! I didn’t even notice.”
“You didn’t notice that you had to get out from under the bed when you should have been able to get up off of it?” a hint of sarcasm.
“Well, no, it felt normal.”
“Hmmm…”
I’d noticed that Kyle was very quiet during all this. He was usually chatty. I searched the room to find him and found him by the mirror. He was starring into it.
“Kyle?” I called.
He turned around and his eyes were glowing blue. Oh my God! Not him too!
